The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 1, when troopers on patrol saw a black Land Rover on Blue Hill Avenue (Route 28) in Dorchester with no front license plate and extremely dark window tint, Massachusetts State Police said.
Troopers stopped the car at the intersection of Tennis Road and identified the driver of the SUV as Tylique K. Ortiz-Howard, 25, of Boston, who has a criminal history with guns, according to state police.
After refusing repeated orders to get out of the car, troopers reached into the driver’s window to open the door.
That’s when Ortiz-Howard sped away south on Blue Hill Avenue, causing the front door to hit both troopers, who weren't seriously injured.
A Boston police officer saw the car on Route 1 in West Roxbury heading to Dedham, state police said.
In Dedham, an officer saw the three men run into a Holiday Inn on Ariadne Road.
At 10:55 a.m., one of the passengers of the SUV, later identified as Luis F. Santos, 24, of New Bedford, ran out of the hotel and was placed in custody by state police.
Officers found the driver, Ortiz-Howard, and the other passenger, Tristian D. Howard, 21, of Brockton, on the second floor of the hotel and arrested them.
Ortiz-Howard also tried to flush a pink pill down the toilet while he was in a cell, state police said.
He is being charged with:
- Assault and battery on a police officer
- Assault and battery with a dangerous weapon
- Failure to stop for police
- Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
- Number plate violation
- Window obstruction violation
- Possession of a class E narcotic
- Marked lanes violation
- Driving without a license in possession
Tristian D. Howard and Santos are both charged with:
- Assault and battery on a police officer
- Assault and battery with a dangerous weapon
- Accessory after the fact of a felony
Bail for each person has been set at $25,000 cash, and they are expected to appear in the Dorchester Division of the Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday, Jan. 2, Massachusetts State Police said.
